Post subject: Possible birth place nowy targ galicia austria
While looking at my grandfather's WW1draft card it lists Nowy Targ Galicia Austria as a birth place...
He was born on August 15,1894. Name we know him as Fabian Kocanda..
Any help would be great..
Thanks

Nowy Targ is in Podhale, so this would make him a Góral. He may be from a small village near Nowy Targ and just listed this town as it was the largest town near him. Feel free to check out my forum about the Goral-Highlanders for more information. Please check "yes" on the poll. Welcome! Bill

Hello,
We were discussing Fabian Kocanda last year. I suggest that we combine the threads.

Thank you Shellie for pointing this out, I merged the two topics.
As for Kocanda I think there is also possibility that your grandfather's surname might be pronounced with Polish "ń" in the middle - Kocańda. You can use google translate tool to listen to difference in Polish pronunciation, click here: http://goo.gl/DQNy7 and click the "speaker" button in the right down corner of the text field.

How did you learn your ancestry left the country? I may have the same thing that happened in around 1912. Could not figure it out.
