However I did learn one key word - Waclaw Robert was born in Kolomyja.
My son and I will now be in Poznan next week as well as Warsaw in order to see the records you have uncovered for Gollubin and now the information for the Schnitzer side also.

Hi Amanda,
Such great news that you got the naturalisation document for Waclaw Robert and that it indicates he was born in Kolomyia! Did you gain any further insight into what the name Ducan might be?
I am looking at what you wrote about the trip you will be taking to Poznan and to Warsaw. Poznan will be a beautiful place to visit, all the more so because you know your family members lived there at one point. Unfortunately, Poznan is quite some distance from Golub-Dobrzyn where your Anna Schulz is from. It would be lovely to be able to go see that church. You'll recall the map I provided (see the last post I made on this other thread):
https://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=29003&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=Golubin&start=15
If I am understanding you correctly, you anticipate that you will be able to see original records for your Schnitzer family in the Warsaw archives. I doubt that Warsaw will hold any records from Kolomyia and the various other towns in today's Ukraine that your family lived in. Not all archives are open during the summer months, but you can check on that if you haven't already.
The good news, of course, as Barb pointed out, is that you can apply to the USC for the death records for Irena and Roman, and you don't have to be in Czestochowa to do that.
I hope you are able to soak up some atmosphere and culture from the places your ancestors walked, and find a comforting connection to them on your trip.
All the best,
Sophia

I have something for you!
It appears that there was a child born between Roman and Robert Waclaw. If I am reading this correctly, she was born, baptized and died all on the same day, the 9th of October, 1906. Her name was Isabella. I believe I am seeing her father listed as Michal, a music teacher, and her mother listed as Irena. I have not yet deciphered the rest of it but it should tell us Irena's maiden name as well as where Michal was from. I think it says Irena was from Kolomyia.
Here are the two records:
This is the birth, record #572 : http://agadd2.home.net.pl/metrykalia/301/sygn.%201870/pages/1_301_0_0_1870_0059.htm
This is the death, record #522: http://agadd2.home.net.pl/metrykalia/301/sygn.%201870/pages/1_301_0_0_1870_0105.htm
Both records are from Lwów Szpital Powszechny. I realize that Lwów hasn't been on your list of towns to look at, but it is possible that in his capacity as a music teacher, Michal Schnitzer moved from place to place.
Best regards,
Sophia
P.S. I consulted with Barb, and she added the following info: Isabella was the daughter of Michal Schnitzer, 31 years old, (son of Joseph and Maria nee Saszkiewicz) and Irena, 27 years old (daughter of Antoni and Domicella).
More info from Barb: The place of birth for Michal Schnitzer was Wola Zółta, Żółkiew, Chyrów. She agrees that Irena was born in Kolomyia. |
Hi Everyone,
It is so wonderful to see all the great information that was found for Amanda's family. I would like to ask everyone's opinion. Do you think this is a sibiling to Michael Schnitzer?

Here is the link for the birth record for Ludwika Schnitzer. It is Record #1 - Scan #7.

Amanda, I don't see Robert Waclaw (1912) in the Kolomyjas church records. Checked for the years 1911-15. Quite often people don't give the exact location, but mention the largest city in the area.
Trish, Ludwika is already on the chart. Good to hear from you again!

Hi everyone,
Did we already know that Roman lived in Poznan? This has to be him. The birth date is 18 July 1905, the place of birth is Kolomija and the parents' names are correct, Michal and Irena. Go here and search on Schnitzer Roman:
https://e-kartoteka.net/pl/search
Note that there is also writing on the back of his card.
Barb, there is something written in pencil in the "zawod" column. Does it say "dziennikarz," or is that my eyes just trying to find something familiar in the handwriting? Amanda, was he a journalist?
Best regards,
Sophia

Fantastic find, Trish! Great to know Irena and Michael's date of birth. We already know he was born around 1875, and she abt. 1881. The location is correct. I checked these places yesterday and unfortunately I didn't find them.
Sophia, I think it's Łuck (Ukraine).

Hi Barb,
Absolutely extraordinary, the family tree you have been able to construct for the Schnitzer family!
Barb, Trish and Diane,
I imagine Amanda may already be off on her adventure to Poland.
Let's take a moment to look at how far we have come, in two weeks of work, to go from "no traces" of this family to all the information that we have assembled.
It is a pleasure to work with all of you.
Kind regards,
Sophia

Hi Sophia, Barb, Diane, Amanda, and the forum,
Sophia, I totally agree with all you said. It’s fabulous to see how wonderful everyone is on this forum, and to see how everyone pitches in to help. There are so many people on the forum that help with translations, finding records, and finding those impossible clues! It’s totally amazing!
Warm Regards,
Trish

Good Morning!
We are indeed in Poland. We had some luck yesterday finding birth and marriage certificates relating to my maternal Grandmother in Poznan. The archive staff were really helpful - although he pointed out that on the resident card my grandmother was shown as a boy, a fact I had completely overlooked! We also walked to some of the addresses listed in the residents card and found the original buildings, which was amazing.
Today we are in Warsaw but I am not confident now that we will find anything helpful regarding Kolomyia or Lwow, however we will try and see how far we get.
I am also astonished at how far Barb, Sophia and Trish have managed to trace my family and I am so grateful for the time that people have spent to assist a complete stranger.
I get the sense that they like a challenge!!
Thank you so much x
