Post subject: Meaning Kupilas-Kupillas
My surname is Kupillas I know Kupil is action verb meaning He bought Las means woods or forest. Purchaser of the forest. There is a village in the Opole province of the Silesia region of Poland with the name of Kupilas or Kupillas. My question is that the first bearers of my name founded this village or have some connection to this village in Opole.

Very interesting map with all of the old German places names. I heard some time ago that in part of the places, where inhabitants will agree, there can soon exist officially both names of villages or towns - old German and Polish.
As for the place Kupillas, I checked in Slownik Geograficzny... (Geographical Dictionary...) that in 19th century Kupilas (with one "l") in Opole area was a place where mill was located and belonged to Murow town. That's all. No mention about owners of the mill but... it is probable that the name was taken from surname of owners. In villages in Poland there still exist old names of settlements or parts of land which are called by the current or old owners' surnames.
