Post subject: Searching for records - Czertowicz from Panova near Vilnius
My father's name was Anton Czertowicz, he was born in Panova near Vilnius in 1919. His family bought land in Daryszcze in 1932. He joined the Polish Cavalry before the war. He was captured and became a POW of the Russians. On release in 1942 he rejoined the reformed Polish army under General Anders. He fought with British forces and settled in the UK after the war. He never spoke of his family, I assumed that they had died, I found out after dad's death that he was not an only child, he had had seven brothers, some officers in the army, disappeared during the war. I would like to find family records, but am not sure how to go about it. I had joined Ancestry.com's world wide records a few years ago, only to find that they had no Polish records other than those I had provided. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have been researching Trakai area South of Vilnius. I finally hired a genealogist/researcher who lives in Vilnius. He has been very helpful in my search. He will charge you by the hour or can make a package. Let me know if you are interested in contacting him and I will send you a private message.
Also, I have had so much luck with the website 'http://www.kresy.genealodzy.pl'. If that doesn't work, type in the Google search bar ' biblioteka kresowa' and it is usually the second item on the menu that says 'Biblioteka Kresowa Potyczek z Genealogia'. Make sure you click on "translate this page" to get the English version if you need it.
I believe you can open and read most of the documents, but sometimes you may need a special download called DJVU. let me know how you do.

I must have pressed the wrong button as this last message is up but the one before is not. Therefore I'll start again. I have been on the Kresy site, but unfortunately did not find anything on it that my family hadn't inputted. I will try 'Biblioteka Kresowa' as this site, I haven't used. I have also been thinking about hiring a geneologist, as I think that would be the easiest way of actually finding records, at least he/she is likely to know where to look for information.
