Beginning in 1774 the rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire issued Settlement Charters which invited 'foreign' settlers into its newly acquired province of Galicia. German settlers attracted by offers of transportation and special status emigrated from Germany to Galicia. Many of these settlers appear to have helped found towns and parishes in Western Galicia and appear in the earliest parish records for the area.

I am interested in tracing these ancestors back into their native country. Does anyone have knowledge on whether any official records of German settlers exist?

The Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe (http://www.sggee.org/) may be able to provide you with some information. Some info on Galicia is on their website.
