I have been trying to locate the birth record for my grandmother Rozalia Cierpicz born on January 18 in 1884 or 1885 . Her parents are Michaela Cierpicz and Maria Ulranin. Documents filed in the US indicate her birthplace is Cieszanow. My research shows there was only 1 parish in that town. Apparently there is one metrical church book that says Cieszanow in its title, but its only available on microfilm at the LDS library in Salt Lake City Utah USA. Its World Catalogue Unique Item Number 866041648. Has anyone had access to this book elsewhere? Its titled metrical Books 1818-1900 "Roman Catholic Narol Miasto (Cieszanow), Galizien, Austria; later Austria; later Narol (Lubaczow, Lwow, Poland; now Narol

Is there any Poland state archive for this book? Any help anyone can provide is much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I looked on the Family Search website, and I am wondering if this is really the record book that you want. It is for the Roman Catholic church in Narol, which is a good 12 miles from Cieszanów. Narol was in the "bezirk" (district) of Cieszanów which is why you see Cieszanów in the title of this film.

Family Search does have the following:

https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/catalog/results?q.place=Cieszan%C3%B3w%2C%20Lubacz%C3%B3w%2C%20Podkarpackie%2C%20Poland&subjectsOpen=133492089-3

Two of these are for the Greek Catholic Church and one is for the Roman Catholic Church in Cieszanów. When you look at the listing for the Greek Catholic records, be cautious because it is for several churches, all of which belonged to the "dekanat" of Cieszanów, not specifically the church in the town of Cieszanów.

If your family were Roman Catholic, then it is unfortunate that the years 1884 and 1885 seem to be missing from those records. You can see on Geneteka an index of births that broadly covers the years 1818 to 1907, but there are gaps including the years that you want:

https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=09pk&rid=9602&search_lastname=&search_name=&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=&to_date=

If you look just above the table you see a bar where the years that are available are shown in green and the missing years are white. As you see, births from 1866 to 1885 are not there.

However, perhaps your family were Greek Catholic? I ask this because I looked at all the indexed names for births, marriages and deaths that Geneteka has for the Roman Catholic church in Cieszanów and the surname Cierpisz only shows up once. That is for birth #16 in 1893 for Anna Turkoć whose father's name was Jan Turkoć and whose mother's name was Katarzyna Cierpisz. They belonged to the parish of Cieszanów but lived in Niemstów. It could be the name Cierpisz was much more present in the years for which records are missing, though, so it could still be the family were Roman Catholic.

I am also not seeing the surname Ulranin in Geneteka's index for Cieszanów, although I do see a few Uranin elsewhere in woj. Podkarpackie, specifically in Jarosław.

If you'd like to share the records you have on Rozalia Cierpicz that show she is from Cieszanów, I'd be happy to take a look, on the off chance that you were having trouble deciphering the handwriting of a ship manifest or something and that Cieszanów was just a "best guess." If you are already certain of the place, then I don't know how to guide you on finding the missing years for the Roman Catholic records but you may try looking at the Greek Catholic records.

Best regards,
Sophia

thank you very much for the guidance. I got the town of Cieszanow from a typewritten "Declaration of Intention" that was filed when Rose started the naturalization process. She never did complete the process. As far as I know from the family, they were always Roman Catholic. Maybe the records are missing. I will look at the books you cited. It looks like I can see the first source you cited, id #866037270 at a local LDS library. I did not realize that bar on the top of geneteka records showed missing years. Thanks again as I thought I had looked closely at the titles of metrical books, but I missed this one.

Hi,

You didn't find records there because you included the name Maria in your search for Uranin records in Jaroslaw. If you look at the screenshots that I am attaching, you will see that I searched with only the surname Uranin. There are a few records for Katarzyna Uranin in Jaroslaw, whose married name was spelled by the indexers as Matujek and as Matrejek. If you do the search the same way that I did, you will see marriage and death records there also; my screen shot shows only the baptisms.

I am attaching a second screen shot, this time from Ukraine, for a Maria Kocur whose married name was Uranin.

I don't know how helpful either of these are to your research, but worth taking a look at anyway, right?

Best regards,
Sophia

Added note, 10 Sep: This same Katarzyna Uranin also shows up in Geneteka as Katarzyna Oranin. It may be helpful in your search to try substituting an O for the U as you continue looking for your family.

hello. we have located another document that is handwritten. It is very difficult to read the city name before " Galicia, Austria". I am wondering if you could give me your opinion.

Hi,

This is an index card, derived from a ship's manifest, for Rozalia Pudlo.

The town that is given in the box along with "Galicia, Austria" is, to my eye, Lazof and in my opinion this is most likely meant to be Łazów. There is a Łazów in Poland, in the Podkarpackie region.

I did briefly consider Płazów as the real name of the place because there is a Płazów just 7 miles northeast of Cieszanów. However, it does not seem that likely that the leading letter "P" would have been missed by the person transcribing information from the manifest onto the index card.

Best regards,
Sophia

Hi Everyone,

I believe this is the first original manifest for Rozalia coming to the USA in 1902. Here is the link from family search for the manifest. The manifest is a dark copy. Rozalia is on line #21. Rozalia is going to DeLancey, Pennsylvania. Rozalia married on 18 August 1902.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFGL-5YF?lang=en

I believe her and her husband, "Anthony" Pudlo went somewhere, maybe a visit in Canada for the record you posted was the border crossing from Canada to the USA in 1908.

Regards,
Trish

Hi Trish,

Thanks for this!

I have to correct my statement about the index card. It is the same type as was used for extracting information from ship manifests but as you pointed out, this one was from a land crossing. The manifest you posted from 1902 is really helpful. I believe it is showing her last residence as Ułazów. It's difficult because the person writing the manifest added "Galicia" and the part of the letter "G" that dips below the line makes it a little hard to decipher. You see exactly the same thing up on line 11. There is an Ułazów, Poland and it is not far from Cieszanów (about 8 miles west).

Hi mtmtntop and Trish,

Ułazów looks very promising! Ułazów belonged to the church in Stary Dzików. See below a screenshot from Geneteka's index for Stary Dzików, showing the deaths of two people whose last name is Cierpisz. There is a possibility that these are Rozalia's parents.

The 1894 death is for Maria Cierpisz, age 50 1/2 years, and the 1900 death is for Michał Cierpisz, age 54 years. The text for each death clearly shows that they were wife and husband. I realize you are looking for Cierpicz and not Cierpisz. However, when you follow the link to the image for Maria, you see that her maiden name was Wolanin and that is close enough to Ulranin that it does make me pause.

What do you think?

The unfortunate part is that the birth records for Stary Dzików do not include the years 1872-1892 and that makes it impossible to confirm Rozalia's birth, if indeed she was from this place.

Best regards,
Sophia

Hi mtmtntop and Sophia,

Great find Sophia! I believe you found Rozalia's parents. I do agree with you that the surname Ulranin is for the correct surname of Wolanin.

I am attaching the death record for Maria Wolanin who married Michal Cierpisz. The record is from familysearch.org. It's image #45, record #53.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRQ3-RSJ?i=44&cc=1910265&cat=257162&lang=en&groupId=1910265

I am attaching the death record for Michal Cierpisz from familysearch.org. It is record #8, however, it's on image #193 not #192.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RQ3-PV8?i=192&cc=1910265&cat=257162&lang=en&groupId=1910265

There is also a son named Jan who died in 1896.

This is the link to Geneteka.

Trish
